Welcome to the Wyoming Alpha Chapter of Tau Beta Pi, at the
University of Wyoming in Laramie, WY. As an engineering honor
society, Tau Beta Pi is committed to providing service and support
to the College of Engineering and to the Laramie and University of
Wyoming communities. WY-A is well known for its projects, which
include community service, recognition of outstanding engineering
students and faculty, and support for regional academic competitions
for K-12 students.
Members of Tau Beta Pi are elected by their
peers based on their outstanding scholarship and exemplary character. Only the top one-eighth of the junior engineering class and one-fifth
of the senior engineering class are eligible for membership.
Tau Beta Pi began at the University of Wyoming in 1920 as Zeta Phi, a
local honorary society for junior and senior engineering students.
In 1932, Zeta Phi was chartered as the Omega chapter of the Sigma Tau
national honorary engineering fraternity, and a pyramid and rail
monument ware erected at the entrance to the Engineering Building to
commemorate the society. In 1974, the Sigma Tau Fraternity was
merged into the Tau Beta Pi Association, and the present Wyoming
Alpha chapter was officially formed on April 19, 1974. At this time,
the monument was modified to include the bronze Tau Beta Pi bent. At
the University of Wyoming, over 1500 members have been initiated in
Sigma Tau, and Wyoming Alpha has initiated over 1400 members.
