Brian Gastrock (Student Chapter President) - Steel Bridge Competition

Brian Gastrock informed the group that the steel bridge designed by the UW Student Chapter was selected to compete in the national competition at Texas A&M on May 20 and 21, 2000. The bridge is a rail bridge and 10 people (9 students and Dr. Edgar) will be traveling to Texas A&M in a passenger van. The bridge will be towed behind the van on a trailer. Dr. Edgar indicated that the UW Engineering department is paying for most of the trip, but food money will be needed. Dr. Edgar asked for $700 for this purpose. Floyd Bishop motioned to grant the $700 and the motion was accepted.

Brian Gastrock also indicated that the concrete canoe placed first in aesthetics at the regional competition. The canoe was designed and built using fiber mesh shot-crete.

Location and Time for Fall Meeting

Sandy Buckstaff proposed that we coordinate the fall meeting with the NSPE meeting in Casper. Dr. Foster commented that there are many engineers in Casper who do not belong to ASCE. Some feel they get more out of NSPE in Casper than ASCE. Sandy Buckstaff proposed that we tentatively schedule the fall meeting for September 15, 2000, depending on the NSPE meeting date and the UW football schedule. The meeting location will be determined at a later date. Motion to accept by Dr. Edgar, second by Dr. Foster.

Student Scholarship

The students were asked to leave the room while the scholarships were discussed. Dr. Edgar indicated that Brian Gastrock was the only student to complete an application for a scholarship. Dr. Edgar suggested granting Mr. Gastrock a scholarship of $700. Floyd Bishop motioned to grant Mr. Gastrock a scholarship of $750. The motion was accepted. The students returned to the meeting and Mr. Gastrock was informed of the $750 scholarship.
