Topic: Oxygen Reduction Reaction Study of Transition Metal Carbide Catalysts with Performance Evaluation in Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell
Abstract: The contemporary global energetic requirements elucidate the need for alternative energy sources. This work presents a catalyst platform consisting of platinum supported on phase-pure molybdenum carbide and evaluates its implementation in fuel cell devices. Specifically, proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC), as the basis for harvesting energy more efficiently. Further, PEMFCs require electrocatalytic surface to speed up the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) kinetics, so practical usable levels in fuel cell devices can be attained. Platinum-based catalysts are the most effective catalysts delivering high ORR activity. Unfortunately, the high cost and scarcity of Pt have limited the development of more efficient fuel cells for both stationary and portable applications. Alternatively, the catalyst platform proposed here has considerably lower Pt mass loading than commercially available catalysts while maintaining catalytic activity and durability uncompromised. Furthermore, this work aims to establish a rigorous baseline and provides insights of the electrochemical capabilities of Pt-Mo2C.
