Summer Workshop Offers an Engineering Based Approach to Science and Math InstructionJune 29, 2009 -The University of Wyoming Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, working together with faculty colleagues from the College of Education's Science and Math Teaching Center, and with other engineering colleagues, is conducting a summer Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) workshop. The 10 day workshop, offered June 22-July 2, is an initiative of Professor Sadrul Ula of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and offers hands on training and instruction from engineering and education faculty utilizing engineering based teaching and activity modules adapted by the Wyoming Electric Motor Training and Testing Center. According to Rob Ettema, Dean of the College of Engineering and Applied Science, “this initiative is one that CEAS is closely interested to foster with the College of Education. By all accounts so far, the workshop is an attractive format for introducing high-school teachers and students to the wonderfully diverse career prospects associated with technology.” The workshop will show (via a combination of lectures, field trips, and lab experiments) how science and math knowledge is put to direct use. “We need to educate our students and impress upon them that science, math, and engineering can be exciting, interesting, and related to the things they want to do in the future,” says Dean of the College of Education, Kay Persichitte. For information about this workshop please contact Dr. S. Ula, University of Wyoming, 307-766-6268 or via e-mail at ulas@uwyo.edu. |
