Jere C. Hamilton

Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award

July 9, 2007 - Jere’ C. Hamilton received his B.S.M.E. from the University of Colorado and became a registered professional engineer in 1969. His initial career (until he began teaching at UW) was as a mechanical architectural engineer designing and managing the design of plumbing, fire protection, heating, ventilating, air conditioning and electrical systems in buildings of various sizes and uses. The work included projects such as Denver General Hospital, a 30-story building in Tucson, and work for the Atomic Energy Commission.

Hamilton began his teaching career at Aims Community College in 1985 as a part time instructor in math and physics courses. He began full time teaching at the University of Wyoming in January 1988 in the Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering. His position as a faculty lecturer afforded him the opportunity to continue to consult in his chosen architectural engineering fields. Hamilton believes in the importance of faculty remaining active in their specialty fields and feels this allows him to bring very practical engineering knowledge to his students. His position at UW and practical experience has given him the unique pleasure and opportunity to assist many great students in the architectural engineering program at UW.

The Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering hired Hamilton to teach mechanical and electrical building design courses to the students in architectural engineering. Prior to that time the program graduated students in building structural systems only. He developed a program which has proven to be very successful in providing the basic knowledge required to design mechanical building systems.

In addition to his own consulting practice, Hamilton’s past engineering experience includes work with several different firms including Heckman-Hamilton, Inc.; Swanson and Rink; Flack and Kurtz; McFall, Konkel and Kimbel; Combustion Engineering; and ARIX.
