Wyoming Wins Western Rugby Championship

April 16, 2007 - The University of Wyoming recently earned top honors at the Western Rugby Football Union championship with a 14-5 frigid and snowy victory over New Mexico at the Northern Colorado Varsity Athletic Fields.

Winter conditions and overcast skies hampered both teams visibility and offensive production but Wyoming prevailed with the help of College of Engineering graduate, Zachary Tyrrell. Leading at halftime 9-5, Wyoming’s Tyrrell scored off a driving mall, adding additional security to the Wyoming lead.

The victory capped off a winning weekend for the Cowboy rugby team. Wyoming defeated 12th-ranked LSU, 42-13, in the first round and stomped Texas A&M, 22-12, in the semifinals to earn the team it’s eight trip to the college rugby Sweet 16.
