Wyoming Engineering Society Recognizes Outstanding StudentsFebruary 12, 2007 - At their recent annual convention, the Wyoming Engineering Society (WES) recognized the student engineer of the year, department honorees, and scholarship students. The five departments of the UW College of Engineering (architectural, civil, chemical, electrical/computer, and mechanical) each nominated their top graduating senior for the WES Student Engineer of the Year award. The award recipient receives an unrestricted grant of $2,500 and each of the four Honorees receives a $1,000 grant. Ashley Spear, 2007 Student Engineer of the Year, maintains a 4.0 GPA and is active in Mortar Board, Tau Beta Pi, Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, and the President's Senior Class Ambassadors. Last year, she served as the student representative on the Presidential Search Committee. Spear has conducted research for NASA at Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio, and has worked as a structural engineering intern at DCI-Engineers in Bellevue, Washington. After graduating, Spear plans to attend graduate school to pursue masters and doctoral degrees in structural engineering. Her ultimate career goal is to teach engineering at the university level.
