Missile Development Subcontract Awarded to UWNov. 6, 2006 - Wickman Spacecraft and Propulsion Company (WSPC) has awarded a $226,000 subcontract to the University of Wyoming to conduct low pressure cold flow tests, upgrade the UW free jet test facility and provide computational fluid dynamic (CFD) analyses support to WSPC for this project. Associate Professor, Dr. Jonathan Naughton of the Mechanical Engineering Department will lead the effort at UW and be supported by two graduate students. The WSPC contract is a two year contract with the United States Army at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama to develop and demonstrate a new solid rocket motor with an innovative pintle rocket nozzle. During this contract, WSPC will demonstrate the nozzle through cold flow testing, solid rocket motor tests and a demonstration motor firing at Army facilities. WSPC will be constructing a high pressure, cold flow facility for this contract. The U.S. military needs more capable tactical missiles to hit more sophisticated enemy aircraft and fast moving ground targets. WSPC’s new rocket motor would significantly enhance American tactical missile capabilities.
