"Rising Above the Gathering Storm."Oct. 25, 2006 - William Wulf, president of the United States National Academy of Engineering, will speak Monday, Oct. 30, at 1 p.m. in the Wyoming Union West Ballroom. Wulf, the UW Graduate School's 2006 distinguished speaker, will discuss bolstering United States competitiveness in science and technology. The lecture is based on a recent report released by the National Academies, "Rising Above the Gathering Storm." The report assesses the state of America's science and technology and provides recommendations to reverse the erosion of U.S. global dominance in these areas. Don Roth, UW Graduate School dean, says the report is widely regarded as the most compelling summary of the challenges facing U.S. competitiveness. "The lecture will be of significant value to all scholars and I strongly encourage attendance," Roth says. The NAE, along with the National Academy of Sciences, are both honorific organization and independent, authoritative advisers to the government on issues involving science and technology. Wulf previously was an assistant director of the National Science Foundation, founder and CEO of Tartan Laboratories, and a professor of computer science at the University of Virginia and Carnegie Mellon University.
