Julie Sandberg

Tau Beta Pi Outstanding Junior

Julie Sandberg, a graduate of Albin High School, is involved in activities within the College of Engineering and on campus. Julie is an electrical engineering major and is currently the Vice President of the UW Student Branch of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and an active member of Tau Beta Pi, serving on two committees. She was a Peer Assistant for the Introduction to Engineering course, as well as a counselor for the Engineering Summer Program. Julie has also been involved in community service activities through her sorority, Delta Delta Delta, and SPURS, the sophomore honorary.

During the past two summers, Julie demonstrated her interest in engineering by participating in two programs funded by the National Science Foundation. Last year, she designed and built a working laser sensor at the University of Central Florida’s College of Optics and Photonics. The previous summer, she worked with faculty at UW designing specialty devices. After earning her bachelor’s degree, Julie plans to attend graduate school to continue her education in electrical engineering.

Matthew Scarborough

Tau Beta Pi Outstanding Sophomore

Matthew grew up in Evans City, Pennsylvania. During high school, Matthew was active in JROTC and commanded the Seneca Valley Raider Battalion his senior year. Two days before running the Cleveland Marathon, he was disqualified from military service due to a heart murmur. Matthew spent his first year of college at Norwich University, a private military school in Vermont, and won the Freshman Cadet of the Year Award. Due to his medical disqualification and no longer being able to serve in the Army, Matthew transferred to the University of Wyoming where he is currently majoring in Civil Engineering with an environmental concentration.

Matthew is a member of the International Engineering Club and Engineers Without Borders. He also holds a job as a lab assistant and volunteers for the Biodiversity Conservation Alliance. In his free time, Matthew enjoys reading Mark Helprin, lounging in Saratoga’s Hobo Pool, and exploring Vedauwoo. After graduating, Matthew hopes to continue his education at the University of Illinois.

Matt would like to thank Edward E. Cummings, Caitlin Campbell, and Patrick Gordon for teaching him to “do nothing without passion.”
