Feb 17, 2006 - The Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) is hosting a crash attenuator design competition as part of the College of Engineering's E-Week activities. Cash prizes are awarded for the "best" design (lightest, effective design). First prize is $50 cash, second prize $25 cash, and third prize $10. Crash attenuators must be built with provided supplies and must protect an egg in the back of a tonka truck that is hurled down a 4 foot ramp into a concrete wall. Pick up an entry form and bag of supplies in front of the engineering building from 10 am to 1:45 pm on Wednesday, February 22. You must test your attenuator by 2 pm that day to qualify for cash prizes.

Design Competition Rules

    1. You must be a University of Wyoming student to be eligible for prize money. Faculty and staff members may participate but are not eligible for prize money.
    2. You can only use the material provided to you in the supply bag (including the bag itself). Any crash attenuators using additional supplies will be disqualified.
    3. You can only participate in the competition once. You are allowed to work in teams and share the prize money but you can only be on one team.
    4. Attenuator failure is any damage to the egg that results in loss of egg whites or yolks.
    5. The winners of the competitions will be the designers of the lightest weight, successful crash attenuator.
