Doctor of Philosophy


For students of outstanding academic ability and with demonstrated capacity for undertaking independent research on advanced engineering problems, the Ph.D. program in Mechanical Engineering is offered. The attainment of a Ph.D. degree in mechanical engineering will normally require at least two years work beyond the master's degree.

This program considers for admission students with outstanding academic ability and a demonstrated capacity for undertaking independent research on advanced engineering problems. The attainment of a Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering will normally require at least two years work beyond the master's degree. A minimum of 72 graduate hours, at least 42 hours must be earned in formal coursework. Note: All graduate students are required to complete the first graduate solids course (ME 5000) and the first graduate fluids course (ME 5440). The remaining hours may include dissertation research, internship hours, or additional coursework. A minimum of 24 in-resident coursework hours required

Admission Requirements

Applicants must meet the minimum Graduate School Admission requirements Applicants must also submit a statement of purpose. It should include you expected area of study. Areas of study at UW include: thermal science, fluid mechanics, solid mechanics, or the mechanics of materials.

International applicants are also required to complete the TOEFL (Test of English as Foreign Language) exam with a minimum score as indicated in the Graduate Bulletin. Foreign students also must complete a confidential financial statement.

Financial Aid

Financial support for qualified graduate students is available mainly in the form of research and teaching assistantships. A limited number of assistantships are available to highly qualified candidates. All assistantships require course work and research activities that are usually coincident with the MS thesis or PhD dissertation topic. Students obtaining support in conjunction with a grant are obligated to perform research which will help meet the obligations of the principal investigator to the funding source.
