How to apply for a Mechanical Engineering Graduate Degree


Note: We are not longer accepting applications for the Fall 2008 semester. Please consider applying for either Spring or Fall 2009.

Step 1 - Application

Complete the Graduate School on-line application and pay the application fee:

Step 2 - Transcripts

Official transcripts should be sent in a sealed envelope from the institution directly to the Graduate School. Note: the Graduate School will only conditionally admit those students without "official" transcripts.

Mechanical Engineering will accept copies of official transcript for the application packet. A bachelor's degree from an accredited school is required. Schools must be accredited by the Council for Higher Education, or equivalent. A cumulative minimum GPA of 3.0 on previous coursework is required for full admission.

Step 3 - GRE Scores

Have the GRE testing site send the GRE Scores directly to the Graduate School. UW's institution code is 4855. A composite score minimum of 900 (master's) or 1,000 (doctoral) on the Verbal and Quantitative sections of the GRE is required for full admission.

Step 4 - Letters of Recommendation

Three (3) Letters of Recommendation sent directly to the Department of Mechanical Engineering in sealed envelope from the person preparing the letter.

Step 5 - Statement of Purpose

A typed a one-page statement clearly stating your area of study (solid or thermal/fluids) and describing your objectives and/or focus in your particular area of study.


Step 5 - Graduate Assistantship Application (Optional)

Graduate Assistantship Application send to the Departmetn of Mechanical Engineering.

Step 6 - Confidential Financial Statement

Confidential Financial Statement send to The Graduate School

Step 7 - TOEFL Scores

Official TOEFL Scores - sent to the Graduate School (school code is 4855).

A minimum score of 540 on the written exam, 207 on the computerized exam, or 76 on the Internet-based test (TOEFL iBT) is required for full admission.

Note: If your TOEFL score does not reflect the minimum requirements, you have not taken the test, or you simply need supplemental English study before attending the University of Wyoming, you have the opportunity to attend our ELS Language Center to improve your English language skills and waive the TOEFL requirement. Step 8 - International Student Advisor's report

Required only if you are applying to the University of Wyoming from another U.S. college or university.

International Student Advisor's Report is send to The Graduate School. This form is available on the International Student checklist page (see link above)
