This laboratory supports Professor Dellenback's experiments in turbulent fluid mechanics and convective heat transfer with two general-purpose flow facilities. One apparatus consists of a closed-loop water tunnel with high Reynolds number capability. A 20 kW heating system is available for convective heat transfer measurements utilizing a uniform heat flux boundary condition. A second flow facility is a small, open-circuit air tunnel with moderate pressure drop capability for internal flow studies. One heat transfer measurement technique available for use in the air tunnel is the transient phase change surface coating method, where the coatings are monitored with a dedicated video camera and frame-grabbing hardware located in a host computer. A two-component, fiber optics based laser Doppler velocimeter, with state-of-the-art FFT signal processor supports detailed turbulence measurements in both flow facilities.
