Think about where you want to study or work.

• Do you want to learn a new language?
• Do you want to continue to develop skills in a language that you have already studied?
• Does your ancestry draw you a particular part of the world?
• Do your professional goals influence your choice?

Talk with your academic adviser and the International Engineering program contacts in your department about curricular requirements

• What courses would be good choices for study abroad?
• What courses are best taken at UW? That is, what required UW courses are not likely to be available at another university?
• Can you substitute foreign language credits for any other degree requirements?
• Can you earn any course credit while on an internship?
• When would be a good time for you to go abroad? Normally the junior year is preferred, but the timing has to work for your particular case.

Develop a plan to become proficient in the language of your host country.

• Can you develop your language skill at UW?
• What is the best approach for taking foreign language courses- during the regular semester or concentrated in summer session?
• What are you options for an intensive language course in the host country?

Visit the Office of International Programs

• Do you have the appropriate travel documents: passport, visa, etc.?
• How do you get health insurance?
• What are the costs of studying or working abraod in your host country?
• How do you assure that your scholarships and other financial aid remain available?
• How can you find housing?
• Who handles transfer of course credits back to UW?
