State Coordinators

Every year over 200 Wyoming middle school students, from schools across the State, take part in the MATHCOUNTS program. Following school and regional competitions in January and February, qualifiers will meet in Laramie in March to vie for State MATHCOUNTS honors and the chance to represent Wyoming at the National MATHCOUNTS competition in May. The top scorer at the State Competition also receives a scholarship for future use to attend the University of Wyoming College of Engineering.

Open to all 6th, 7th and 8th grade students, MATHCOUNTS helps students understand how math is important to solve problems in everyday life. Each year, MATHCOUNTS develops an entirely new MATHCOUNTS School Handbook and provides a complimentary copy to every U.S. middle school. Focused on problem solving, analytical thinking, quick reasoning and teamwork, the materials meet the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics’ standards for 7th and 8th grades. Thousands of teachers across the country utilize these creative problems in the classroom or as extracurricular materials.

MATHCOUNTS' founding sponsors are the CNA Foundation, the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE) and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. MATHCOUNTS' national sponsors are The Dow Chemical Company Foundation, General Motors Foundation, Lockheed Martin, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, NEC Foundation of America, Texas Instruments Incorporated and 3M Foundation.

The MATHCOUNTS implementation depends upon the unselfish efforts of many volunteers, from school coaches and chaperones to local, regional and state coordinators. The Wyoming Society of Professional Engineers plays a major role through financial sponsorship as well as providing a pool of eager volunteers.

If you have any questions or would like to know how to participate as a volunteer, please contact the Wyoming State MATHCOUNTS Coordinator, Jerry Hamann, at the University of Wyoming (hamann@uwyo.edu, 307-766-6105).
