ENGINEERING SCHOOLS OF THE WEST GRANTS INITIATIVE (ESWI)

The program at the University of Wyoming is directed by Dr. Jerry C. Hamann.  The goal of the program is to expose children in our region with hands-on access to science, mathematics, and the culture of engineering by developing and delivering instructional modules from K-12 math and science curricula.  Objectives at the post-secondary level include redefining and restructuring the the freshman and sophomore-level math, science, engineering and computational curricula to provide a foundation for educating our students with the most current topics and technology in the field.

This is accomplished by providing programs in the state of Wyoming that raise the awareness and importance of math and science through engineering.  One event is the Middle School Girls Engineering Summer Camp.  Occurring one week in the summer in order to raise the interest of computer science, mathematics and engineering for younger ladies.  Another event sponsored in part by the Hewlett Foundation grant is the Thinking and Doing Math and Science through Engineering Workshop, which is designed for K-12 educators across the state of Wyoming who are interested in integrating engineering based topics into their math or science curriculum.  The Wyoming State MATHCOUNTS competition is supported in part by this grant and is a nationally recognized mathematics competition for middle school age students.  Every year the competition is held at the University of Wyoming and teams from across the state compete to be on the Wyoming State team that competes at a national level.

The development and expansion of curriculum for the College of Engineering and Wyoming Community Colleges is an ongoing task.  The goal is to continue to ensure a dynamic, and solid foundation is being used to educate our future engineers using the latest topics and technology.

At the University of Wyoming the Hewlett Foundation Grant has provided many opportunities for individuals to get involved in Engineering based topics who may not have the chance otherwise.
