Background: The project will study how Geographic Information
System (GIS) and Internet technologies can improve public participation
in transportation decision making also called a participatory geographic
information system for transportation (PGIST). The project works with
regional agencies and stakeholders to develop and evaluate on-line tools
for expanding public participation in transportation planning for the
Seattle Metropolitan area. The project aims to improve people's ability
to express their views and expand their knowledge to come to a shared
understanding about values, interests, and concerns.
This project is a collaboration between investigators at the University
of Washington, the University of Wyoming, and San Diego State University.

Project Status: The four year project started in the
Fall of 2003 and is scheduled to complete in the summer of 2007. Year
1 involved system specification and design. Years 2 and 3 are for system
development and programming. Year 4 will be for system testing and a 300
participant decision simulation.
