Title: What Happened? A Vertically Integrated Engineering Case Study Based on Wind Turbines

Principal Investigator's Name(s): Charles W. Dolan

Project Sponsor: NSF

Project Timeline: August 2005 - July 2007

Program Overview: In the winter of 2003-2004 a single wind turbine collapsed in Arlington, Wyoming. The collapse solicits the questions: "What happened?" Can this design be improved? The question forms the basis of an educational research project to develop design questions related to wind turbines that will run through several classed in the college of engineering. Problems, based on the higher applications of Bloom’s Taxonomy, will be developed in Introduction to Engineering classes, Statics, Dynamics, Thermodynamics, Electrical Circuits, Structures, Machine Design, Composite Materials and Power Generation classes. Developed in co-operation with Laramie County Community College and Western Wyoming community college, the problems will be the basis for a national outreach program.
