Internation Engineering Option

A new degree opportunity for UW engineering and computer science students

About the Program

International Engineering is a new degree opportunity available to UW engineering and computer science students.

The primary elements of the program include:

  • One semester of study abroad at a partner university.
  • An optional four to five month paid internship in the host country.
  • Integration of foreign language study with engineering/technical courses.
  • No significant increase in credit-hour requirements

Key Features of the Program

  • Your pre-approved foreign course credits are guaranteed to transfer back to UW.
  • You are registered as a UW student while abroad; so you continue to pay tuition at UW rates; you can continue to receive your UW financial aid.
  • Costs of study abroad are comparable to attending UW for one semester.
  • University Studies requirements for cultural context courses are satisfied by foreign language coursework and your study abroad experience.

Foreign Language Requirements

Study abroad can be successful with 15-18 semester credits (four to five courses) of foreign language, or an equivalent level of skill. Exchange students will also participate in an intensive language course in their host country before beginning their studies.

Why You Should Participate

Business leaders outside the United States routinely speak two or more languages. They know that in order to compete in the global marketplace for products, services, and careers, they must be technically, culturally and linguistically literate.

An international experience involves more than just international study or an internship. Integration and immersion into another society includes breaking down cultural and linguistic barriers. Once these barriers have been breached, engineers and other technical professionals can begin to understand the perspectives and attitudes held by others around the world. With this understanding, not only will you benefit from the newly gained knowledge of international issues, practices, and perspectives, but your awareness of domestic perspectives and attitudes will also be greatly enhanced.

You will develop a broader foundation of cultural balance from which to continue to develop your professional and personal lives. Ultimately, you will position yourself to participate on a global scale with top companies where both technical skills and international experience are essential.

Requirements to Participate

The University of Wyoming requires a minimum GPA of 2.5 for participation in study abroad. Additional requirements for your degree program may apply. Consult your advisor for details.

Benefits of Participation

  • Skills learned abroad develop cultural awareness, flexibility in problem solving and dealing with ambiguity, heightened level of creativity, and ones ability to take calculated risks.
  • Major companies require international experience for middle and top-level executive positions.
  • Corporations are relying less on recruiting and more on internships to develop talent, find the best match of student interest with corporate need and opportunity, and test drive potential employees at low cost.
  • A second language can be as important a job skill as knowledge in a technical area.
