Comprehensive Design Electives
CDE stands for Comprehensive Design Elective. Each student is required to take a CDE course prior to graduation. Students will= not be allowed to take any portion of the CDE until they have completed all the 3000 level courses in Civil Engineering.
Every CDE is designed to meet the following criteria:<= /p>
The following are the characteristics of a CDE:
1) It should be a group
project, however there may be specific opportunities in which individual ef=
fort
may be appropriate as in a student initiated project. It should specifically exclude
situations in which students are using work previously performed before the=
CDE
course or being performed concurrently as on a job. Consideration should be given to A=
BET
Criterion 3(d) - an ability to function on multi-disciplinary teams.
2) It should deal with mo=
re
than one area of interest.
3) It must be open-ended.=
4) There must be some
practitioner involvement, with a minimum involvement including review of
project work and some form of feedback.
5) There must be a written report and an oral presentation, both at a professional level and quality.<= o:p>
6) The student workload s=
hould
range over approximately 40 to 50 hours per hour of design credit for each
student working on the project.
7) There should be a real=
istic
costing of the project, using Means, ENR or some other appropriate cost
estimate.
8) Should be taken after =
Junior level courses are completed. Since all CDEs are designed to have the same core
components, the actual field doesn’t matter too much. As you will see in the schedule be=
low,
you usually have three choices of CDE within a one year span. Thus we strongly encourage you to =
take
one of these CDEs rather than some workaround. In addition to the guaranteed CDEs=
listed
below there is almost always some other supplemental CDE being offered.
Below is a summary of current CDE options.
